How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged window pane can be an issue. It could also be an opportunity to upgrade your glass to energy efficient or insulated replacement windows glass and benefit from more comfort, higher resale value and reduced utility costs.

You can do it yourself for a only a fraction of the cost it would cost to hire an expert. You only need the appropriate tools and a few hours of your time.

If your single-pane windows are outdated broken, deteriorating or damaged replacing them with more modern glass that is tempered or insulated can increase energy efficiency and reduce noise while also preserving the original character of older homes. A majority of homeowners with hand tools can repair a window pane. In addition to a new pane, the following items are required such as latex glazing putty; glazier's points; pliers; and an electric heater to warm the old putty if required. Wear safety glasses and gloves before you begin. Working with broken glass could result in serious injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. It is recommended to use pliers however, a flathead may work as well. After that, use a wood chisel, or putty knife, to remove the rest of the old putty around the frame and the sash. Be careful not to damage the window sash. Take your time and work slowly. It is a good idea to do this on a stable ladder instead of the ground and have someone stand below the sash in order to help hold it in place.

Make sure the window frame is ready to receive the new pane after you have removed the old glue. Find the width and the height of the sash opening and subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). These measurements can be sent to a home center or hardware store to get a piece cut of glass that is in stock to the correct size. You can also cut the glass yourself, if you have the tools you need.

Then, place a glazier's tip on each side of the frame to hold the pane in its place. Note down the exact dimensions of the frame. Take these measurements to an hardware store or home center, and have the new pane cut smaller than the frame's opening. This will ensure that the pane fits comfortably and allows for expansion and contraction.
